Featured Fine Arts Scholar Bar Shapray
Bar Shapray was a Vassar graduate, with fluency in French and German language and culture. She has written about Albrecht Dürer’s art, the important German Old Master painter, engraver, printmaker, mathematician, and theorist of the 15th and 16th Century German Northern Renaissance. http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/durr/hd_durr.htm
Her mentor and family friend, Ayala Zacks, was a collector of many important artists including Chagall, and was called the Peggy Guggenheim of Canada. http://www.artlyst.com/articles/canadas-peggy-guggenheim-ayala-zacksabramov-dies
Bar was also friends with the Frankfurt-born, Manhattan and Zurich iconic dealer André Emmerich, who was very involved as a gallerist with some of the most important color-field artists of the 20th Century. http://galleristny.com/2012/08/archives-of-american-art-completes-cataloguing-of-andre-emmerich-gallery-records/
Growing up in a culture of fine art collectors and museum contributors, Bar has had the priviledge of being part of a group of art scholars and collectors including mentors such as Ayala Zacks, that were friends with some important artists in the 20th Century. It is an opportunity that every fine art student with access to the best should have. In addition to knowing important painters, sculptors and critics, a major newspaper article was written about her being a friend of Salvador Dali. The fashion designer Valentino envisioned her as Roman. Her friend Alexander MacIntosh, Q.C. of Blake Cassels fame encouraged her. She was early on influenced by masters in the permanent contemporary collection of the Museum of Modern Art. She was working on an art history book about Dali and Chagall. She will be very much missed.

“…slavery has many definitions.
If a human being is being made to do something against their will
and they are being exploited
then that’s slavery.”
